Statement on Roe v. Wade
Today is a dark day in America. Roe v. Wade has been overturned and our constitutional right to privacy has been taken by an extremist Supreme Court. Almost half a century of settled law was torn down by activist judges in the interest of a noisy minority with extremist beliefs.
Here’s the truth: we’re all pro-life, but the opposite of pro-choice is pro-control.
These extremist factions are seeking to control bodily autonomy and impose their minority beliefs on the majority and it is an insult to our democracy.
Here’s another truth: we cannot ban abortions, just safe abortions.
No one wants to be in a position to need to make the difficult decision to have an abortion, but that decision is often a medical necessity to save the life of a mother and it should stay between an individual and their doctor. The state has no business being involved in your private medical decisions and we must maintain our constitutional right to privacy and bodily autonomy.
As it now stands, the only thing keeping NC from passing extremist abortion bans is the veto power of our Democratic Governor Roy Cooper. Thanks to gerrymandering, North Carolina is a state with far more registered Democrats than Republicans yet has a state legislature that’s been under Republican control for a decade and they are dangerously close to gaining a supermajority in the state legislature.
